Grandfather Mountain
Nature carved a face that stops you in your tracks.
We’d driven parts of the Parkway several times but never found an area where we could see Grandfather Mountain - until we did. There it was, plain as day, a rugged peak with a profile like an old man’s face - a true interpretation of the visual you behold. The Cherokee called it “Tanawha,” meaning a fabulous hawk or eagle, but settlers later dubbed it “Grandfather.” Its cliffs hold their own brilliant artwork; a reminder of why the mountains have always been our happy place.
